Itinerary

Upon arrival at Lalibela Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, begin exploring the Northern Cluster of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, the largest group in the complex. Visit: Bete Medhane Alem – the largest monolithic church in the world Bete Maryam – known for its beautiful murals and decorations Bete Meskel Bete Denagel Bete Golgotha & Bete Mikael – among the most sacred churches These churches were carved from solid volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela. Walk through narrow rock corridors and observe priests performing traditional religious ceremonies.  

  • Overnight: Lalibela

After breakfast, continue exploring the Eastern Cluster of Lalibela churches. Visit: Bete Gabriel-Rufael – believed to have once served as a royal palace Bete Merkorios – associated with ancient prison chambers Bete Emanuel – famous for its Axumite-style architecture Bete Abba Libanos – uniquely carved and partially attached to the rock Afternoon – Bete Giyorgis The highlight of the day is visiting Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), Lalibela’s most famous church. This magnificent cross-shaped structure carved deep into the rock is considered the masterpiece of Lalibela. Pilgrims from across Ethiopia gather here to pray and celebrate religious festivals.  

  • Overnight: Lalibela

After breakfast, drive through the scenic countryside to visit Yimrehane Kristos Church, located about 40 km from Lalibela. This remarkable 11th-century church is built inside a large cave and features traditional Axumite architecture, beautifully decorated interiors, and a peaceful spiritual atmosphere. After visiting the cave church, return toward Lalibela and continue to Asheton Maryam Monastery, located high in the mountains overlooking the town. Travelers can reach the monastery by hiking or mule ride, enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding highlands. The monastery contains ancient religious manuscripts, crosses, and beautiful paintings. After the visit, return to Lalibela and transfer to the airport for departure.
